Police condemn Lagos lawyer killing, detain errant officer

On Monday, the Lagos State Police Command expressed its outrage at the unidentified officer's murder of Bolanle Raheem, a lawyer, in the state's Ajah region.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police public relations officer, said in a statement that the offending officer had been taken into custody as the command started looking into the victim's death on Christmas day.

Hundeyin said the officer didn't follow the standard operating procedures, and he said a reexamination of the police rules of engagement would be done to stop situations like this from happening in the Ajah area of the state.

"The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Abiodun Alabi has expressed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of barrister Bolanle Raheem, who was shot and killed by a police officer in Ajah on Sunday, December 25, 2022," Hundeyin stated.

“The errant officer has since been taken into custody along with his team members on the instruction of the CP. In the same way, the CP has ordered that the case be sent to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yaba for a thorough investigation.

Given that a similar incident occurred at the same location less than three weeks ago, this has become one too many. The unacceptable incident violates the force's rules of engagement and standard operating procedures, and it is embarrassing to say the least.

"Past this occurrence, the Nigeria Police Power will do a reappraisal of its standards of commitment in a bid to stop such avoidable terrible episodes."

According to Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Command urged the state's citizens and residents to remain calm because the command was already in constant contact with the Nigerian Bar Association and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that justice was served in the case.
